Olumo, the Mystique of an Alluring Symbol, the Memoirs of Justice Olujide Somolu, was written in 1976, the year of the author's death. In the intervening 35 years between then and now, many of his conclusions, inferences and lessons have been borne out and even further strengthened and vindicated. Justice Somolu believed that an unseen hand guides the destiny of man from the cradle to the grave and that we all owe what we are to that unseen omnipotent power which rules the affairs of men. These memoirs dwell mainly on his law career which spanned private and public service during colonial era and the first decade of independence. The author recounts the difficulties and obstacles placed in the path of the young Nigerian lawyer-trying to find his feet among the established 'alpha-male' legal minds who looked upon the younger generation as intruders into their terrain. This is the setting for high courtroom drama, of feisty legal battles, which the author retells with precision and humor.
